Emily Sundblad
L'Almanach 14 : Emily Sunblad
Born in 1977 in Sweden. She lives and works in New York.
A multidisciplinary output characterizes the work of Emily Sundblad. Besides being an artist, she is also a performer, singer, actress, and gallerist under the Reena Spaulings pseudonym. She makes the Bohemian ideal anew by interweaving her art and life.
A day at the races is the result of two drawing sessions the artist did at horse races on April 21, 2011 and March 21, 2013. These pastel drawings have been created "live" onto horse racing newspapers pages on the day of the race. They try to reproduce the sensation produced by the speed of horses and the atmosphere of the racetrack. This series evidently recalls artworks by Degas and Dufy, with its interest in both the outmoded aspect and permanence of the horse racing world, but more than anything it wants to convey the fun and excitement of spending a "day at the races."
